Vance Gilbert

The folk scene has produced some remarkable performers in the last few years, but it has been said that among current crop of folk singers and acoustic musicians, no one so totally owns the stage as Vance Gilbert. For one thing, there are two Vance Gilberts. There is Vance Gilbert the amazing singer-songwriter, whose words are both poetic and powerful, enough to earn him the Kerrville Music Award's Vocalist of the Year in 1997, and whose rich tenor is full of emotional eloquence and passion, and whose dextrous finger picking on acoustic guitar has been called wizardry. And that's all the first Vance Gilbert. Then there is Vance Gilbert the comedian, who is entertaining not so much because his jokes are funny and impersonations so on the mark, but because his manner is so joyful, spontaneous, and at ease.

Expect a rollercoaster ride of an evening. Vance knows how to write a catchy tune, but the words you may be singing along may haunt you. Uproariously funny can be juxtaposed with uncompromisingly wrenching. Descriptions of Vance Gilbert concerts usually include such words and phrases as "riveting," "sheer genius," "stunning," and my favorite, "subtle yet devastating."

Vance has played regularly near here in Syracuse, Rochester, and Oxford, but this will be his first appearance in Ithaca. He will bring the Folk Song Club's spring season to a glorious close. For further information call Ginny Gartlein at 272-3471, or Email Bill Steele. Tickets are also available at Borealis Books, Now and Then Records (formerly Rebop), at Bound for Glory, and at the door.
